  1. North of the sequoia groves is Kings Canyon, cut by the south fork of the Kings River.  Outside the park, the canyon reaches a depth of some 8,200 feet from river level up to the peak of Spanish Mountains.  There it is the deepest canyon in the United States, even deeper than the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
